Lab 1: Pen Tool
Bezier Game
On the first week of class, many of us still did not obtain access to our adobe licenses. So in order to start learning and practice, we were asked to go through the Bezier Game tutorial and do the challenges to familiarise ourselves with the basic pen tool. The function and keyboard shortcut is similar to AI.
Lab 2: Chiaroscuro
Pear Exercise
For this exercise, we were instructed to trace the pear image with the pen tool. Then once we have the overall shape, we can use knife tool or shape builder or pathfinder tool to create the shadow in order to colour the pear. We are also encouraged to experiment with different ways of dissecting or cutting the pear shape by using the knife tool. Sir also told us that we should try adding elements by extracting shapes from other images (such as the shadow of the skull) and placing this element into the pear for additional design.
People Exercise
Firstly, we were told to trace a given image in two separate paths (shadow and non shadow), using pen tool and curvature tool. Then, use either the pathfinder tool or shape builder to select and separate shadow shapes and non shadow shapes into their own groups. Finally, we can apply clipping masks onto the shapes by making the two groups into compound paths. We can abstract images online to apply texture/colour to the clipping masks for each group.
Lab 4: Illustrated Type
W9 - Pencil tool / smooth / font customisation / Image trace
Basically in this week's tutorial, we learned how to use the pencil toll and adjust the pen tool options according to our preferences. We were taught two ways to adjust the smoothness of the pencil. Either the Pen tool option or [object > path > smooth].
Then, we also used the "type to path tool" to shape our text according to the pencil stroke. In order to distort the text, we can [select text > create outline] and adjust the shape of the text however we want.
As for image trace, sir actually told us that he noticed many students attempt to trace images but wasn't successful. So instead, he gave us an easier solution to trace images, by [select image > image track (16 colours) > expand]. Then once the image is expanded, we don't ungroup it. Just have to select isolated path and use the magic wand tool to select individual colours to change.
W10 - Shape Building / Envelope Distort
For this week's tutorial, we are given a step by step tutorial on how to create an image by duplicating and using the shape builder to build our desired object. Then, we are to blend a new shape into our object to create our envelope distortion. Once we have a separate section for the distortion, we can create a new text and distort the text into our selected section. To colour the text, we just need to double click on the text itself.
Additional Exercise
Poster design
This is an additional exercise for us. We need to create a poster design with the theme of Equality for the TISDC 2024 Poster competition. Below is the final poster I came up with and more about the process can be found in my DPI project portfolio (click to view).
