Project 2: Pitch Bible
Instruction
Based on our Project 01: Develop a short story. We are required to develop sketches and illustrations for our world and character. Then put them in a presentation slide for our Pitch Bible presentation. The slide should include:
1. Cover page and title
2. Logline
3. Product Specifications
4. Synopsis
5. Theme
6. Character Descriptions
7. World Descriptions
We are also to record our presentation to pitch our story. The presentation should be no longer than 8 minutes.
References
Based on my story, I looked for references of my character (a Kalanchoe Pinata plant) just to have an understanding of how my character should look. I also looked up drawing styles to see what would look better and which style would be easier to achieve under a short timeframe.
Character Sketch
My initial character sketch was a Kalanchoe Pinnata leaf with a small body but after reviewing it with Mr.Kannan, he suggested I redesign the character without the body. He said the current design does not represent a leaf very well. So, I was asked to simplify it.
When I redesigned the character, I removed the small body and added a stem to the leaf. Pretty much making it look exactly like a leaf, just adding a face onto the leaf to give it life. I stuck to the same colouring style and continued working on sketching different movements/actions and expressions for the character.
After I was done with designing the leaf, I started on sketching a Kalanchoe Pinnata plant. This would be the mother plant of the leaf character. Again, I based my sketch exactly according to a real Kalanchoe Pinnata plant and coloured it in the same style and colour palette that I used for the leaf character. Different layers were used for sketching, colouring and shadowing.
World Sketch
For the Kalanchoe Pinnata plantation before the forest fire. I started with colouring the background and soil/grass, then added two tree trunks to the sides of the canvas to represent depth.
Then, I duplicated my Kalanchoe Pinnata plant from earlier, warped it and added it to the canvas as a foreground. For more depth and to show that it's a plantation, I duplicated the plants a few more times, played with the transparency and distortion and added them behind the main plant.
Lastly, I added highlights and shadows in different layers and messed around with the procreate built-in presets until it looked like a proper world drawing.
As for the plantation after the forest fire, I started with sketching out the world layout first before getting into colouring. This is because I wasn't confident that I would be able to achieve a good field-of-depth with the brown tone that would be used for this world sketch.
Everything else after the sketch, was just the same process as before. I started with background colour, added some highlights and blended it in according to my sketch. Then, added the midground colour and again, coloured according to my sketch, blend and add highlights. once I had a rough look of the world, I added shadows and highlights again for a more complete look.
Additional Illustration Sketch
During consultation with Mr.Kannan, he told me to add an additional page of illustration in my pitch bible slide. He said it would bring more impact and help draw attention to my story. So, I decided to pick the climax scene where leaf meets the forest fire and did the illustration. A timelapse of me doing the illustration is inserted below for reference.
