Final Project: Original 360 Short Film
Instructions
To produce an original 360-degree short film with strong immersive
elements. Students are expected to work in groups of 3 or 4 to
brainstorm ideas and proceed with 360 Video Production based on
their selected ideas. The final product should include proper
360-degree editing as well as audio for a full video
production.
Ideation
For this project I was grouped with Qian Yue, Ying Xuan and Zi
Tong. On week 10, the four of us communicated via whatsapp and
google meet to discuss ideas and brainstorm different scenarios
that would best fit a 360-degree film. We were advised to stay
away from documentary-like productions and try experimenting
with new and unique ideas that can bring out a fresh perspective
on 360-degree videos.
These were the ideas that we came up with:
Lecturer's Feedback:
- Qian Yue's idea is interesting and doable, however due to its
dual reality concept, dialogue should be minimal.
- It is also advised to play around with the locations to make
the story more captivating; technical obstacles should also be
factored in (i.e, lighting, tripod visibility, dual reality
editing on 360 film).
- Sher Wei's idea (my idea) requires a stronger story
direction.
- Provide better reasons for the story to continue; what makes
the girls want to keep searching, whats the end goal and what
causes the frantic reactions and how can we convey that do the
audience.
- Ying Xuan's idea also needs to have more story direction.
What makes the girls panic? What makes them want to cover the
camera.
Project Proposal
After further discussion, we all agreed that Qian Yue's idea
was the most interesting. It has a strong story direction and is
a very interesting idea that has never been thought of/done
before.
Filming (Behind-the-Scenes)
We faced some difficulties during our filming stage due to the
issue of having to find similar actor/actress who looked like our
teammate Zi Tong and her boyfriend. So, we only had a limited time
frame to film, adding to the fact that most of our casts aren't
from KL hence we were only able to film on campus. This limited
our creative process, meaning we were only able to film scenes
that can be carried out in spaces on campus that are
accessible.
Editing Process
Once filming was completed, I imported each scene into
Premier Pro to crop and assemble. A mask was added into each
video so that visual effects and adjustments can made on the
mask layer to represent the "imagination" world. I went for
a dreamy effect, by playing with the Gaussian Blur and Luma
key. Two layers were used to adjust and blend the effects
well.
Then I added an adjustment layer on top of these two layers
to adjust the video positions for a smooth transition
between each scene. This is because, when stitching
360degree videos, a cut automatically appears between each
clip to reposition it back to 0degree every time. This makes
an odd glitch that forces a position change regardless of
user interaction. An adjustment layer helps to remove this
issue so that interactivity can be smooth.
Draft Video [No audio]
Once I was done with the clip assembly and video
editing, I sent it to the group chat for confirmation.
Then we worked on choosing the BGM and narration to be
paired to the short film. Zi Tong did the narration
while Qian Yue compiled the BGM and narration to the
video.
