Project 02: 360 degrees Video Short Film

Instructions
To produce a refined 360degree short film, based on our project 01. Present a strong conceptual and technical justification for use of 360dedgree medium. The short film should include 3 scenes, sound effects and background music. Not exceeding 3 minutes in duration.

Initial Proposal
We followed our Project 01 idea of a bug view perspective. Through consultation, we were given feedback that our "bug" presentation is not strong enough. It's not obvious enough that we are trying to film from a bug POV.

The initial idea was to create a short experimental film just from the perspective of a bug. However, implementing this idea in a 360degree camera would feel too bad as there is no inciting incident or climax scene. The whole film would be blend and monotone. We were advised to try a different approach (ie. different background, theme, setting, storyline) to give the short film more depth.

Refined Proposal
Finally, we decided to refine our storyline to a bug's chaos of trying to escape from human's capture. As a bug, it doesn't understand our intention, so the concept of the story is a fast-paced comedic rush scene. This helps to show panic and doesn't leave the short film feeling bland.

Filming Process
We actually had a small hiccup because Mr.Ridhwan mentioned that he thinks our way of "showing the bug" is not solid enough. Our concept had limitations due to the fact that we can't move the 360 camera around freely without showing a tripod, which would break the short film illusion.

Qian Yue and I came up with different ideas to tackle this problem.

My idea was either to do cut shots/jump shots with the camera placed in different angles to show the bug running away; or to incorporate more third POV shots after catching the bug to present what we're doing.

Qian Yue's idea was to tie some fake leaves to the camera and pull it in the bushes to fake a bug's movement without breaking the illusion.

We tested it out and realised that this idea worked pretty well in making the camera move without showing external elements.

Editing Process
Once we were done with filming, we assembled the footages together and adjusted some of the footage VR plane to sphere effects. Below is the footage assembly outcome.

Then, I imported sounds from Freesound and Free Cartoon Comedy Sound Effects Download - Pixabay, as well as Youtube sounds converted to MP3 (non-copyright).

I prepared one background music, which had a slow built up into a rush rhythm. I also searched for sound effects (ie. bug sound, insect flight sound). For the sound effects, I adjusted the loudness and surrounding to make it match the space the bug scene was in. I also adjusted the original footage so that it is softer and plays as an ambient sound.

Final Video Attempt 01

This was our first attempt on our final short film with the sound effects and background music. Mr. Ridhwan said overall it's not bad, the only issue he had was with the intro and transition into the bug view scene.

The intro scene was a bit jerky, it was suggested to make the panning start from beginning instead of start from the middle so that it doesn't come off so awkward. We were also told to remove the transition as it feels out of place and breaks the scene.

Furthermore, sir mentioned that for future reference, we can act better for the intro to bug POV scene to introduce the scene flow.
