PROJECT 04: MOTION ABSTRACT
Instructions
1. Students will synthesis the knowledge gained in task
1, 2 and 3 for application in task 4. Students are to
create a theme based abstract motion graphic video that consist of a good
audio visual say it in 3D/2D, mix media or any experimental visual output that
has strong theme.
2. Students describe and reflect on their competencies within the design studio context, supported by evidence.

Chosen Concept
I decided to do a travel video using footage that I
have from a recent trip to Switzerland.
Initial concept idea
My initial concept idea was also a travel video
but was more towards a "vlog". Following a
sequence rather than a short trailer. However, I
felt that it wasn't abstract enough and seemed
more so like video editing than motion
graphics.
I spent quite some time learning how to colour
grade and compile the videos together but wasn't
sure how to proceed to enhance the transitions
and graphics from there.
During our weekly tutorial session, this
was the progress that I provided. Then, I
was advised on trying to redirect my idea
into more of a "trailer" concept, than a
travel video compilation.
Process
So, I went back to Pinterest and looked
for new aesthetics and ideas that
matches with my travel footage. I came
across a few videos that had a film
aesthetic concept and thought that was
quite fun and fitting.

Editing
After I did my storyboard, I exported the
elements into PNG files to be used in
After Effects.
I separated each section into different pre-compositions so that my main composition wouldn't have too many variables. It was also easier for me to work with the camera and null layer with lesser footage.
For the intro section, I used a horizontal film frame and duplicated it twice to spread for 6 footages. Then, I adjusted each footage to fit into the frame. Then, I used the camera/null layer to pan the film from left to right in a smooth motion without messing up the footages.
This is my main composition where I edited a small compilation of footages and utilised different transition methods. From the Intro section, I did a zoom in on one footage from the film frame. Then, as shown above, I made the next footage in the compilation look like a camera filming. I also added a lens blur and exposure effect to make it seem as though a photo is being taken.
Using the null layer again, I fit this footage into a polaroid frame that I exported from illustrator. This polaroid zooms out and overlays the next footage in the compilation.
The ending includes a vertical film frame scroll effect, with the same concept as the intro section. This part continues, zooms out and then I put another footage to "pull down" over the film frames as a sort of closing tag.
