Instructions

Students are expected to divide into groups, and decide on a topic that fits a one of these three criteria:

1. Creating awareness (such as Global Warming , Recycle etc.)
2. Explaining a process (such as a "How to" video)
3. Defining a concept (such as "What is Fast Fashion", "What is Colour Wheel")

The task is to produce a basic video animation on an infographic report to present information about our chosen topic.

Design considerations include:
  • Organisation principles - LATCH and Content Organisation
  • Aesthetic Principles - Animation Principles
  • Cognitive Principles - Principles of visualisation
Video resolution of 1920px x 1080px HD  (min 1.5 max 3.5 mins)

Flip Presentation

The topic that my group and I chose is "Colour Blindness and How it affects Web accessibility", which follows the criteria of bringing awareness to a topic. As design students, we feel that colour blindness is a condition that is rarely considered in design accessibility. Therefore, we believe we would be able to present valuable information regarding colour blindness that may help designers understand the need for design inclusion.

Our group split into different tasks accordingly:

Storyboard/Moodboard
1. Sher Wei
2. Jia Yi
3. Chloee

Illustrations
1. Min Xuan
2. Tiffany
3. Tong En
4. Guan Mei

Editing
1. Ke Yao
2. Janice

Narration
1. Carmen

Storyboard & Script

This is the storyboard that Jia Yi and I came up with; The idea is that we want to put colour blindness into perspective by showing colour blindness vision and how it affects website legibility. Then, we go on to explain the statistics and information regarding types of colour blindness. While there's one last section for explanation on how colour blindness affects web accessibility, and what makes a website more accessible. Mostly, we tried to give examples on accessible designs and non-accessible designs.

Then, I worked on our script to explain the animations and detailed explanations on how we want each scene to play out. As well as narrations to pair with each frame so that the information we want to present is clear. Some amendments were also made after getting feedback.

Four other members were tasked with the illustration, working on the overall style to make the infographic video interesting. However, they were having difficulty with the consistency of their art style. Some also mismatched the given size for submission, furthermore there were also minimal artistic elements in their illustration. Even after updating their progress as per request, there was still an evident dissimilarity amongst their artstyle, colour scheme and typeface. So Jia Yi, Guan Mei and I had taken some time to fix whatever felt necessary to unionise everything, which caused a slight delay in our scheduled timeline considering we almost had to redo most of scene 1, 2, 4 (part 2) and closing.

Our finalised illustration is as shown above. The art style that we chose is somewhat fun and bubbly with a big emphasis on the use of colour. Consequently, we used the typeface "Quicksand" to match our unique and creative illustration. Once we had gotten approval for our finalised illustrations, Carmen recorded the narrations following the script that we wrote.

As for the editing process, Janice and Keyao delegated their tasks as such.

Janice - Scene 1 and 3
Keyao - Scene 2, 4 and closing

The editing team mostly proceed smoothly, except some parts where the narration did not match up to the illustrations. The biggest challenge was scene 4 which we had to rewrite and ask Carmen to re-recorded, due to the lack of clear/concise information in the original recordings.

Reflection
The project started off quite well, with all members willing to participate for the flip presentation. Each member did their parts on finding information, compiling the slides and presenting. However, when we started on the storyboard; I was frustrated because when I asked if anyone had ideas on how to progress, no one would reply me even when I asked for opinions during our online discussions. After completing the storyboard on week 3, the illustration members were supposed to complete their parts by end of week 5. However, what baffled me was that despite constant reminders and progress checks. The work that they produced was clearly last minute, copy pasting directly from the storyboard and even sent files in the wrong artboard size. Causing an almost 1 week delay for illustrations, ultimately pushing back the rest of the project progress.

In terms of group project, I've realised that being a group leader is challenging and takes a lot of patience. There were many parts during the project where I had to be hands on and take over when things were not done right even after multiple corrections. However because of this, I was able to properly be involved with the whole process of this project. So It really helped me realise the importance of having clear information and proper details when it comes to presenting any type of data. The topic that we chose is also an eye-opener on what to look out for in the future and a reminder to always ensure design should be inclusive and accessible for all individuals.
