Album Cover Design:
Frank Sinatra, who was a famous singer in the '40s and '50s era
is the persona of focus for this task. We are to choose one song
from a given list, to showcase our creativity in an illustrated
composition to express our chosen song. The composition should
be done in the form of an album cover with foreground,
midground, background and typography. A suitable art style
should be applied.
The song list are as given:
- Fly me to the moon
- The way you look tonight
- Come fly with me
- Girl from Ipanema
- New York, New York
Come Fly With Me (Interpretation/Storyline):
To start off, the song gives off Jazzy vibes with loud,
cheery instruments. Whereas the lyrics depict the thought of
romancing with a loved one. There's a lot of emphasis of being
the air and going to the countryside. Hence, these are a few
elements I picked out from the song.
Mood:
- Excitement, Romancing, Jazzy, Rhythmic
Key-words:
- starry-eyed, lovely, fly away, angel cheers,
rarefied.
The take away that I got from this interpretation, is a
storyline of two people dancing and revolving in their own
world. To me, the song feels like a couple who is freely
expressing their love for each other, in their early stages of
excitement and honeymoon phase. While they talk and romanticise
the idea of flying away in each other's company with no care for
the reality of the world.

My initial sketches were ideas that I had in my mind after
listening to the song and interpreting the lyrics. Initially
I picked out the key-words and pieced them together in my
sketches.

AI generated reference images
Since it was my first time ever creating an album
cover, I didn't know where or how to start. So these
two photos were actually generated ai images with
the prompts being something like "Album cover in art
deco style of "Come fly with me" by Frank Sinatra,
including tango dancing couple, city and plane".
With this, it was easier for me to visualise my
ideas and illustrate with the help of the overall
composition and style of these image
references.

coloured according to my reference.

Outcome:
Final non-animated album cover
Essentially I simplified the references in my own style and added the title/subtitle to make them more obvious. The foreground being the couple, the plane and the title, midground being the floor and shadow to create depth. Lastly background is the city in faded colours and relatively small size to depict the idea that the couple is dancing freely away from their busy lifestyles.

The idea is that the plane flies in and
cuts through the title into the front frame.
Then because the plane is moving, the shadow
also grows and the woman's dress flows along
with the breeze.
Reflection:
I think this task was quite fun to do. As someone who enjoys listening to music, it was definitely an experience to be able to visualise a song. The time constraint was stressful honestly, but the overall design process wasn't hard, just the composition took some time to complete. I can also say that I am satisfied with my final non-animated composition. As for the animated one, I think it can use more work and has a lot of space for improvement.
