Project 1A: Compositing Collage

To submit 1 physical collage and 1 digital collage.

(Week 02) - Physical Collage
Most of the magazines that I went through were mostly about life style and fashion. Elegance and leisure were one of the main themes, hence I decided to pick a few photos that showcases softness and serenity. The phrase "愛之初體驗" means "the first experience of love", paired with the longing look of a woman, flowers and plants depicts the blooming feel of love. However, I also included a photo with a darker vibe, to represent the feelings of uncertainty to balance out the the overall impression. Lastly, I added the caption "but I think it should be fun", just to further express the excitement of love.

Final Composition :

Reflection: For the final composition, I completely re arranged the entire collage and added an additional cut-out. Taking into account from my previous compositions, I realised that in order to reduce the overall disorganisation and noise, I had to separate the human figure from the title phrase and the yellow flowers. The reason for that, is that all three of the cut-outs had similar saturations and colour palette, which leads to making the collage merge together blurrily. So instead, I placed the eyes in the center to attract a viewer's line of sight. Then, to lighten the mood of the collage, I added the additional woman figure of a girl looking serene with the yellow flower as a background. The original figure that I had, I moved it towards the bottom left corner of the page to separate the feeling of excitement and serenity with anxiety and uncertainty in the collage. In the overall collage, you can see that the top/right side of the page is brighter with a lighter mood, whereas the bottom/left side has a more uncertain/quiet mood.

(Week 03 - Week 04) - Digital Collage
We are to choose the best composition file from week 3 to improvise the digital collage into week 4's exercise. To learn and apply the usage of adjustment layers and filters to further enhance  the composition.

Chosen Composition :

fig 2.2 Composition Layers

Description: For this collage, I used the pen tool on the buildings as well as to cut out the certain objects from their original photos. (The human figures and the train) then I arranged them randomly and decided to try and utilise "screen" using one of the photos given, as the main shape. After doing so, I realised the photo gave off a vintage/olden tape feel.

Adjustment layers & Filters :

fig 2.4 Final Composition submission

Description: Firstly, I adjusted the exposure level as the original version was overexposed, hence turning the exposure level down. I also used selective colour and colour balance to tone down the blue/cyan and tone up the yellow and reds. Then I brought down the brightness just to further give off a rustic vibe.

Project 1B: Digital Imaging

To submit 1 image of Shazam and 1 self-image photoshopped into "Hearts Mansion" photo. As well as 1 recoloured image from a list of B&W photos.

(Week 05) - Shazam Hearts Mansion

Submission:

(Week 05) - My reflection
For this submission, we need to take eye-level photos of ourselves with the right technique and angle. Then, with the photo taken, we need to repeat the Shazam exercise on our own photo into the "Hearst Mansion" file.

Process (Eye-level shot):

fig 4.1 Eye-level shot and camera set up

Description: The eye-level shot was taken in my room as I had a window that faces the afternoon sun. So I started shooting at around 4pm, while the sun was not glaring but bright enough for a photo with good exposure. The set up was relatively simple as I already had a ring light tripod to hold my phone. Then I observed photo per photo the height adjustment and zoom level that is best suited for an eye-level shot.
(photo on the right is my set up, photos on the left are the shots)

I wouldn't say I am fully satisfied with either of my shots, but I think that it fits the given task. For improvements, I think the lighting could have been better by showing more contrasts between light and dark. The other aspect would be that I could have moved the phone stand further back to fit my full body in the frame without messing with the angle.

Editing Process:

fig 4.3 Cut out photo is copy and pasted into "Hearst Mansion"

fig 4.4 Figure is adjusted to proper proportions

Description: Firstly, I used the object selection tool to cut my full body, eye-level shot from the background in the original photo. Then copy pasted it into "Hearst Mansion" file. I made sure the pasted layer of my figure was in free transform and positioned it where I wanted with the right proportions.

fig 4.5 "match colour" adjustments

fig 4.6 Shadow layer with "Gaussian blur"

fig 4.7 Ripple effect added to reflection layer

Description: For the adjustments, I followed what I learned from the Shazam exercise and tried my best in making it fit into the "Hearst Mansion" photo as much as I can. I adjusted the hue/saturation and brightness/contrast of the figure, then added shadow to it. Gaussian blur was applied to the shadow layer after changing the opacity to 65%. Lastly, I made a copy of the figure layer then changed the height to -100 and moved it to make a reflection on the ground.

Submission

Reflection: Honestly, I am not too satisfied with the final product, as I think the colour is still a bit off. However, I do think that I managed to learn a new skill. This activity helped me familiarise myself with the pen tool and adjustment layers, as well as break down the process of photoshopping one photo into another.

(Week 06) - Recolouring B&W
For this task, we need to submit a photo where we apply our recolouring knowledge and skill from the tutorials we followed. A list of black and white photos are given for us to choose from, but we need to find our own reference photos for the skin and hair tone.

Editing Process:

fig 5.3 colour palette selection

fig 5.4 hair recolouring

fig 5.5 skin recolouring

Description: The steps that I took to recolour the bnw photo, was following the advance level tutorial/practice that I did. Aside from the skin and hair tone, taken from the reference photo. The other colours, I just chose what I felt looked fitting with the image.

Submission

Reflection: I think this exercise was fun, I didn't really find it too difficult as the steps were pretty simple. It's a new technique that I will definitely be able to use on other aspects of photoshop and incorporate into photos with lower resolution too. Generally, the tutorial exercises and the final submission task really helped me familiarise with myself with the tools in photoshop, which I found difficult on our first lesson.
