Recap on Design Principles
Gestalt Theory: the idea that humans perceive and interpret visual information as a
whole rather than individual parts.
Contrast: The juxtaposition of elements with noticeable difference in visual
components, to highlight certain values of interest in the overall
image.
Emphasis: To create a focal point to draw the viewer's attention, by making certain elements stand out amongst other components.
Balance: The distribution of visual elements within a composition to create
a sense of stability, and prevent visuals from feeling one-sided.
Repetition: A composition that contains a series of similar or identical components to
create the element of illusion and cohesion.
Movement: When a series of elements are arranged in a way that flows dynamically,
to engage the visual experience of guiding the viewer through a
composition.
Harmony & Unity:
By utilizing and arranging different elements to create a sense of
balance, order and coherence. Harmony represents the unified and
harmonious image where all elements are complimentary to one another;
whereas unity refers to the overall sense of coherence and wholeness of an
image to convey a message of concept.
symbol: in incorporation of graphic representations that carry specific meanings or concepts within a composition.
i.e. doves typically symbolises peace
Word and Image: to convey messages and information with the combination of text and
visuals.

FOCUS: Overfishing / how it affects coral reefs
Overfishing is a problem which arises from the lack of knowledge and
responsibility regarding marine life. The size and rate of the
fishing industry is an issue, as most fishermen are looking to maximise
instead of rationalising their catches. In doing this, the market grows
more aggressive due to the rise in competition, which means stock
replenishes slower than it is caught. Furthermore, ocean activities are
hard to regulate, so there are still many unreported, illegal and
unregulated fishing that occurs. Many regions depend on aquaculture to
keep them afloat, yet are unaware of the effects that they cause to the
sea. As such, one factor that is largely impacted by this are coral
reefs. "55% of the world's coral reefs are affected by overfishing."
(The Coral Reef Alliance). Fishes feed on algae to keep corals from
dying as algae can grow in overwhelming amounts, suffocating healthy
coral reefs and eventually killing them off. As coral reefs start to
decline, the population of fishes would follow because herbivorous
fishes feed on corals to survive.

Firstly, the overall composition of this artwork is remarkable. The
piece is beautifully curated to portray its meaning of the lost of
coral reefs.
Emphasis is placed in the center of the piece in various densely grouped
corals. I believe this arrangement is to show the liveliness of a
healthy colony, which is even more enhanced by the vibrant colours
painted on the corals. Furthermore, the
contrast between the
colours and forms of the corals, from the inner to outer corals, are
quite prominent. The outer corals lose their vibrancy while getting
smaller gradually, depicted the loss of their initial beauty and how
severely they are affected throughout the years. In addition, the
overall movement of this image is portrayed very elegantly. I think it plays a
huge role in guiding our observations, while moving along with the
composition and further illustrating the story told. Moving towards
the furthest corals, it can be seen that a
repetition of certain
forms are used. It shows that the corals have completely lost their
originally glamourous forms, with only simple pieces and studs left
behind. As such, it is undeniable that the overall composition is
undoubtedly
harmonious and united; even with all of its different features and directions, the whole
image comes together nicely without any disruptions of abnormally in
place.
